Between 1789-1801, Kawagoe sweet potatoes were very popular among the people in Edo (an old name for Tokyo). Kawagoe sweet potatoes are grown exclusively for making baked sweet potatoes. As Kawagoe's sweet potatoes are of good quality, they became popular as the home of sweet potatoes.

Many products made of sweet potatoes are available in Kawagoe now. Same examples of traditional sweet potato products are Imo beer (sweet potato beer), Imo ice (sweet potato ice cream), Imoyoukan (sweet potato-paste jelly), Imosenbei (dried sweet potatoes), and so on.
