The feudal lord, Uemura Tosanokami Yasutada, established the morning market in the year of Tensho 18 (1590). The purpose was to promote industries. He encouraged the people to farm in his domain, taught them how to fish and gave them a place to products.

Katsuura's Asaichi is as big as the ones in Wajima, Ishikawa pref. and Takayama, Gifu pref. It has been taking place for over 400 years. Now it is held every morning (except Wednesday), from 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at alternating locations of Shitamachi-dori and Nakamachi-dori.
