In the year of Bun-ei 1(1264), Nichiren-shonin prayed that his mother Umegiku would come back to life, and his prayer was answered. She lived for four years after that and Bosatsu Shogon Dojo was built in commemoration of this. One year later in 1276, his pupil Nikke-shonin built a dojo where Nichiren was born and called it Kokozan Nichiren Tanjo-ji.
In the year of Meio 7(1498) and Genroku 16(1703), terrible earthquakes and tidal waves destroyed the temple and it was moved to its present place. At that time, the grounds were 3456 meters long and 2160 meters wide. It was one of the biggest temples in the Kanto district.
