Fireworks displays are held as a way to enjoy the warm summer evenings. Fireworks were first brought to Japan by the Portuguese at the end of the sixteenth century. Japanese people love to hold festivals where fireworks are used to celebrate special occasions. There are also many communities that put on fireworks festivals in the summer. The first fireworks display was held on the banks of the Sumida River in 1733, and it continues to be a popular event with impressive rockets and other colorful fireworks every year. During summer, adults and children alike enjoy playing with small fireworks and sparklers in their gardens, on the roadside, at campgrounds and on the beach.
