Ueno became a battlefield when "Shogitai" fought the army of the Meiji Government.
The Shogitai War (Shogitai no tatakai) was in May 1868.
Shogitai is the last army of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The army of the Meiji Government was commanded by Takamori Saigo. "Shogitai" lost the battle. They were slain by the Meiji Army and their graves are located near the statue of Takamori Saigo.
Why, then, is the statue of Saigo here? One theory is that the statue of Saigo is watching the ghost of Shogitai.
What do you think?

Ueno Station is nearby. Our trip ends here.
So...what's for dinner...?
